You donโt need a formal title to start building management skills.
๐๐๐ธ ๐๐ผ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฑ๐ผ-๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ by handling certain management responsibilities while your manager remains the final decision-maker.
When I was managing 20+ directs, Shadi Khalek, PhD raised his hand for this. The pseudo-management turned into a real management opportunity for him which led to multiple promotions to senior manager.
๐ฌ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ถ๐๐ฐ๐ต: "I'm interested in developing management skills and would love to take on some management tasks to help the team and grow my capabilities. Could I help with [specific activities like day-to-day coordination for junior members, team reporting, or organizing team events]? You'd still make all the final decisions, but this would give me great experience."
๐ฆ๐๐ด๐ด๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ ๐น๐ถ๐ธ๐ฒ:
โข Managing daily activities and check-ins for junior team members
โข Handling team reporting, metrics, and status updates
โข Organizing team morale events and social activities
โข Coordinating cross-team communications
โข Leading team retrospectives or planning sessions

๐ฝ๐น๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ด๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐น๐ฒ: "This would help me develop skills in delegation, communication, and team coordination. I'd also learn how to balance individual needs with team goals, which I think would make me more effective in any future role."
๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ ๐๐ถ๐ป-๐๐ถ๐ป - your manager gets help with time-consuming tasks, and you get hands-on experience with management responsibilities.
๐๐๐ธ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ด๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐น๐. Even if you decide people management isnโt for you, these skills make you a stronger IC and a more trusted teammate.
Leadership starts before the title. You just have to ask.
